A Bachelor of Science in Radiology and Imaging Technology (BS RIT) is a professional degree that provides the education necessary for graduates to begin a career as radiologic and medical imaging technologists. The graduate possesses technical and clinical competence in performing diagnostic imaging procedures and is prepared for collaborative practice within the healthcare team. The degree emphasizes patient safety, radiation protection, image quality, and evidence-based practice, supported by extensive clinical placements. The programme includes coursework, research components, and hands-on training in various diagnostic imaging settings.
The BS Radiology and Imaging Technology Programme is an eight (8)-semester plan of study, spanning a period of 4 years. Students are awarded the BS RIT degree after completing comprehensive professional coursework, including supervised clinical practice and hospital rotations.
The curriculum is based on the Outcome Based Education (OBE) Model, ensuring that graduates have a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, imaging physics, and diagnostic imaging principles. Initial courses focus on developing a strong basic science background in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and radiographic physics, which serves as the foundation for pre-clinical courses. These include radiation biology and protection, radiographic positioning and techniques, patient care, and imaging modalities such as X-ray, fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, mammography, and nuclear medicine, preparing the graduate with the knowledge and skills needed for patient imaging and teamwork. Finally, in the clinical sciences phase, students are given ample opportunity to develop their hands-on imaging skills and professional attitude, along with image evaluation, PACS and digital imaging systems, research methods, and the promotion of evidence-based practice.
Clinical education is at the heart of our Radiology and Imaging Technology programme. A significant component of the programme is dedicated to developing clinical skills and competencies. Students engage in hands-on training through laboratory sessions, phantom-based practice, simulated patient interactions, and clinical practicums. These experiences allow students to learn and practice radiographic positioning, exposure technique selection, image acquisition and quality assessment, contrast procedures, CT and MRI scanning protocols, ultrasound scanning, and radiation safety practices. We require our students to participate in supervised clinical rotations that expose them to a wide variety of imaging units and a broad range of patient conditions. Through these experiences, students integrate and expand the knowledge gained in the classroom. Our students participate in full-time learning experiences at well-equipped on-campus healthcare facilities.
To further enhance their skills and gain real-world experience, students are required to complete clinical rotations in diverse healthcare settings. These rotations typically occur in hospital radiology departments, emergency and trauma units, diagnostic imaging centers, CT and MRI units, ultrasound clinics, and other relevant healthcare environments. During these supervised experiences, students work directly with patients, under the guidance of radiologists and licensed imaging technologists, to apply their knowledge and skills in preparing patients, performing imaging examinations, producing diagnostic-quality images, and following radiation protection standards across musculoskeletal, chest, abdominal, neurological, and cardiovascular examinations.
Graduates of the BS RIT Programme have a wide range of career opportunities in the field of medical imaging. They can work in various clinical and technical settings, including:
Imaging technologists play a crucial role in helping clinicians detect, diagnose, and monitor disease, while keeping patients and staff safe from unnecessary radiation exposure. They work closely with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to perform quality examinations, support accurate diagnosis, and promote optimal health outcomes.
As with any healthcare profession, medical imaging is a continually evolving field. To stay current with the latest research, technologies, and best practices, imaging technologists are encouraged to engage in continuing education activities, including higher research or academic degrees such as MS/MPhil or PhD. These may include attending conferences, participating in professional development courses, pursuing advanced certifications or specialization in modalities such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, or nuclear medicine, and engaging in research and scholarly activities. Continuing education allows technologists to expand their knowledge, enhance their skills, and provide the highest standard of care to their patients.
