A Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BS MLT) is a professional degree that provides the education necessary for graduates to begin a career as medical laboratory technologists. The MLT graduate possesses technical competence in performing and interpreting laboratory investigations and is prepared for collaborative practice within the healthcare team. The degree emphasizes accuracy, quality assurance, biosafety, and evidence-based practice, supported by extensive hands-on laboratory training. The programme includes coursework, research components, and practical training in clinical laboratory settings.
The BS Medical Laboratory Technology (BS MLT) programme is an eight (08) semester undergraduate degree under Allied Health Sciences, spanning a period of 4 years. The programme comprises a minimum of 139 credit hours (up to 148 credit hours) in accordance with the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy V 1.1, including internship and supervised field experience.
The curriculum is based on the Outcome Based Education (OBE) Model, ensuring that graduates have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory science, disease processes, and diagnostic principles. Initial courses focus on developing a strong basic science background in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology, which serves as the foundation for pre-clinical courses. These include haematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology, histopathology, blood banking, and molecular diagnostics, preparing the graduate with the knowledge and skills needed for specimen analysis and teamwork. Finally, in the clinical sciences phase, students are given ample opportunity to develop their practical laboratory skills and professional attitude, along with laboratory management, quality control, research methods, and the promotion of evidence-based practice.
Laboratory training is at the heart of our MLT programme. A significant component of the programme is dedicated to developing practical skills and competencies. Students engage in hands-on training through laboratory sessions, simulated procedures, and practicums. These experiences allow students to learn and practice specimen collection and handling, staining techniques, culture and sensitivity testing, serological and immunological assays, blood grouping and cross-matching, and the use of automated analyzers, along with internal quality control. We require our students to participate in supervised laboratory rotations that expose them to a wide variety of sections and a broad range of clinical specimens. Through these experiences, students integrate and expand the knowledge gained in the classroom. Our students participate in full-time learning experiences at well-equipped on-campus healthcare and diagnostic facilities.
To further enhance their skills and gain real-world experience, MLT students are required to complete rotations in diverse laboratory settings. These rotations typically occur in hospital laboratories, diagnostic centers, blood banks, public health laboratories, and other relevant healthcare environments. During these supervised experiences, students work directly with specimens and laboratory systems, under the guidance of qualified pathologists and medical laboratory technologists, to apply their knowledge and skills in performing, validating, and reporting haematological, biochemical, microbiological, immunological, and histopathological investigations.
Graduates of the BS MLT Programme have a wide range of career opportunities in the field of laboratory medicine. They can work in various settings, including:
Medical laboratory technologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis, monitoring, and prevention of disease, since a large share of clinical decisions depends on accurate laboratory results. They work closely with pathologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure reliable testing, maintain quality standards, and support optimal patient outcomes.
As with any healthcare profession, laboratory medicine is a continually evolving field. To stay current with the latest research, technologies, and best practices, medical laboratory technologists are encouraged to engage in continuing education activities, including higher research or academic degrees such as MS/MPhil or PhD. These may include attending conferences, participating in professional development courses, pursuing advanced certifications or specialization, and engaging in research and scholarly activities. Continuing education allows technologists to expand their knowledge, enhance their skills, and provide the highest standard of diagnostic service.
