Muhammad Medical College has always been prominent in the high standards of teaching and training future doctors. In this respect, besides regular and traditional teaching, it holds various different academic programmes for the benefit of medical students and junior doctors.
On Wednesday the 15th of May 2024, it again carried out its unique tradition of imparting training to young students and doctors by holding its annual mini-symposium with constant theme of “Students as Teachers”. It is now 15 years since this special programme has been regularly held under supervision of Visiting Professor of Medicine Dr Syed Zafar Abbas. Students were divided into groups, and as an essential part of student’s activities, they were given specific tasks. Topics were allocated to all groups and they were given specific time to present their medical topics to the audience which comprised of students and senior medical faculty. Students “taught” various medical conditions. They not only reviewed the topics, but also provided upto date medical knowledge including recent advances in medicine.
Programme started with recitation of verses from Holy Quran. Hafiz Junaid of Final year MBBS recited the first 5 verses of Surah A’laq (chapter number 95 of Holy Quran) with translation, to highlight the importance of education in Islam. Professor Syed Zafar Abbas then provided an outline of day ahead. The presentations then started in oral form. Students used Powerpoint application to present the topics and used various diagrams, figures, statistics and photographs to back up their talks. They took questions from the audience including their colleagues and senior faculty. They then presented their topics in the form of colourful posters and presented them to panel of Judges which comprised of senior faculty who asked them questions for further details.
Among others, the seminar was attended by Chancellor of Ibne Sina University Professor Syed Razi Muhammad, Vice Chancellor Professor Shams ul Arfeen Khan and Head of Department of Medicine Professor Abdul Qadir Khan. Presence and participation of such senior figures provided further encouragement to students, and showed the importance ISU and MMC gives to such useful activities. In their comments the Chancellor and other seniors praised students for the hard work they had put in their presentations which was reflected in the high standards.
